Urdu is the national language of Pakistan and one of the 22 scheduled languages of India. While it is the official language of Pakistan, in India it holds official status in Jammu and Kashmir, Telangana, and Bihar, and is widely spoken in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Maharashtra.
According to the 2011 Census, Urdu is spoken by approximately 50.8 million native speakers in India[1], representing 4.34% of the total Indian population. Globally, Urdu has over 230 million speakers, including 94 million second-language speakers in Pakistan where it serves as the lingua franca.
Urdu is written in the Perso-Arabic script using the elegant Nastaliq calligraphic style[2], which flows from Right to Left. The script is an abjad, primarily showing consonants and long vowels, while short vowels are indicated through optional diacritical marks. The alphabet consists of 39 letters including aspirated consonants.
