Bengali (also known as Bangla) is the official language of Bangladesh[1] and the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura, and the Barak Valley region of Assam[2]. It is one of the 22 officially recognized languages of India and is ranked seventh in the world[1] among the most spoken languages.
In India, this language is spoken by approximately 97.2 million native speakers[3], representing about 8.03% of India's population. Cornell University reports that Bengali has approximately 220 million native speakers and 250 million total speakers worldwide[1], while the University of Pennsylvania notes roughly 100 million native speakers in Bangladesh[2] and approximately 67 million speakers in India[2], making it one of the most widely spoken languages in the world.
Bengali is written in the Bengali-Assamese script[4], also known as Eastern Nagari, which is a descendant of the ancient Brahmi script[4]. Like most Indian scripts, it is written from Left to Right. The script is characterized by its distinctive horizontal line running along the tops of letters and shares similarities with the Devanagari script.
