Malayalam is the language of Kerala, the southernmost state in India[1], and is the official language of the Indian state of Kerala and the union territories of Lakshadweep and Puducherry (Mahé district). It is also spoken by significant minorities in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra.
This language is spoken by approximately 34.7 million native speakers[2], making up 3.22% of the total Indian population. The University of Pennsylvania reports that over 35 million people speak this language[1]. In Kerala, Malayalam is spoken by approximately 96-97% of the state's population.
Malayalam script[3], one of the Dravidian languages[1], is a Brahmic script derived from the ancient Grantha script[3]. It is written from Left to Right and has 56 letters including 15 vowels and 42 consonants, with additional chillu characters unique to Malayalam.
