Marathi is the official language of the Indian state of Maharashtra and is co-official in the union territory of Goa. It is also spoken by significant minorities in Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and other neighboring states.

This language is spoken by approximately 83 million native speakers^[1], making it the third most widely spoken language in India after Hindi and Bengali, representing about 6.86% of the total Indian population.

Marathi is written in the Balbodh variant of the Devanagari script^[2]. Like Hindi, it is written from Left to Right. The script has evolved to include 14 vowels and 36 consonants, with some unique characters not found in other Devanagari-based languages.
