Hindi Unicode is a set of unique numeric values assigned to render Hindi letters, digits, and symbols. Before the advent of Hindi Unicode, various Hindi fonts such as Kruti Dev, DevLys, and Mangal were used to type Hindi documents.
Since these fonts use Devanagari letters as pictorial representations, transferring data from one computer to another was problematic. Unless the same font was installed on the receiving computer, Hindi text would not display correctly, and essential operations such as spell checking, sorting, and find-and-replace were not possible.
These issues were resolved with the release of Hindi Unicode. Any text typed on this website is in Unicode Hindi, and therefore, it can be used universally in the digital world — for example, on Facebook, Twitter, emails, chat, and software applications such as Microsoft Word and Photoshop.
On Microsoft applications, Hindi Unicode is supported on Windows 2000 and later versions. Only Office XP and newer versions support Unicode Hindi. On the other hand, almost all Linux distributions support Unicode by default.
