Remington GAIL Hindi Keyboard

The Remington GAIL keyboard layout is the standard Hindi typing layout for government exams in India. Based on traditional Hindi mechanical typewriters and standardised by GAIL (Gas Authority of India Limited), it maps each key to a specific Kruti Dev font character.

Key characteristics:

• ASCII-based: characters are stored as English letters; the Kruti Dev font renders them as Hindi
• Includes AltGr key combinations for extended Devanagari characters

The Remington GAIL layout is used in many major government typing exams in India:

The toggle at the top of the typing area switches between two modes:

Kruti Dev Font mode (default): Type using your physical keyboard with the Remington GAIL layout. The virtual keyboard shows key positions for reference but does not insert characters — your keyboard handles all input via Kruti Dev font rendering.

Unicode Font mode: The virtual keyboard inserts Devanagari Unicode characters when you tap or click keys. Text-to-Speech is also available in Unicode mode.

Both modes share the same typing area — you can switch at any time without losing your text.

Remington GAIL: Based on traditional Hindi typewriters. ASCII-based — requires Kruti Dev font to display as Hindi. Used for font-based exam sections (CPCT Kruti Dev, SSC, Railway).

Devanagari Inscript: Government of India standard for Unicode Hindi typing. Produces Unicode text that works on any device without special fonts. Used for Unicode-based exam sections (CPCT Unicode, High Court Unicode).

In Kruti Dev Font mode, the text is stored as ASCII characters that display as Hindi only when the Kruti Dev font is applied. If you paste this text into another application without the Kruti Dev font, it will appear as English letters.

In Unicode Font mode, the text is standard Unicode Devanagari and works in any modern application (MS Word, Google Docs, WhatsApp) without any special font. Use the Copy button in the toolbar for quick copying.
